A young couple works through an uncomfortable situation and a hidden truth. Matuluko directs “How I Lost My Appetite,” a film that resists easy categorization but flirts with several forms: relationship drama, experimental film (there is no dialogue, only body language, and eye contact), and horror. The man and woman lie in bed together reading books, exchanging glances. When the man tries to embrace her, she resists and goes to smoke a cigarette on the balcony. Later, she sits alone at a bar and makes eyes at another man, which leads to a dark revelation. Delivered with stylish visuals and compelling performances (particularly from Nicole Mitchell), Matuluko’s film is a minimal but vivid portrait that leaves room for interpretation as it injects new life into a horror subgenre.
